Why Do Hypoallergenic Earrings Still Hurt?

Hypoallergenic isn’t a guarantee

Have you ever bought “hypoallergenic” earrings… only to find that your ears were still uncomfortable?

There are a few reasons that can happen.

“Hypoallergenic” doesn’t mean “guaranteed not to cause a reaction.” The label alone may not tell you exactly what materials are present... or predict how your ears will respond.

It’s not always nickel

Nickel is a common cause of jewelry-related skin reactions, but some people are sensitive to other metals, too. Some alloys can contain multiple metals, and plating can wear over time, changing which material is in contact with your skin.

It may not be an allergy

Pressure, friction, sweat, moisture, and residue can contribute to irritation, too.

The useful takeaway? Pay attention to the actual materials in your earrings, not just the word “hypoallergenic.”

Try a different post material

If trying different metals hasn’t been a good fit for you, another option is choosing an earring that doesn’t use metal for the post.

That’s what makes Earrings by Emma different: our posts are made from plastic rather than metal.
